DIY Advice From Our Workshop

Measure Twice, Cut Once
Carpentry Tip

Double-check every measurement before you cut, drill or buy materials. Mark with a sharp pencil, cut on the waste side of the line, and test-fit pieces before gluing or fastening — it's the simplest way to avoid wasted wood and a second trip to the store.

Turn It Off Before You Start
Safety Tip

Before any electrical or plumbing job, shut off the breaker or the water supply and confirm it's really off with a voltage tester or by opening a tap. Thirty seconds of checking protects you from shocks, floods and costly mistakes.

Preparation Is 80% of the Job
Painting Tip

Clean, patch, sand and tape before you open a single can of paint. Well-prepared walls give you crisp lines, better adhesion and a finish that lasts for years — the actual painting is the quick part.

Take Photos as You Go
Repair Tip

Snap a photo before you disconnect wires, remove a faucet handle or take anything apart. Your phone becomes a step-by-step reassembly guide, and it's handy to show at the hardware store when you need an exact replacement part.

Buy 10% Extra Material
Flooring Tip

Order about 10% more flooring, tile or trim than your measurements say. Cuts, mistakes and odd corners always eat into your supply, and matching the same batch later can be difficult.
